I attempted to download a new map and computer went crazy. Time for downloading jumped from 2 hours to 13 hours. Afterwards GPS lost all stored info. Discussed with their customer support and they were no help. Sent it back and bought a Garmin. It works great. Don't waste your time with a Tom Tom.


 "XL340 versus the newer models" 2010-08-26

The XL 340 is the oldest device from the XL 340 series. The difference between the XL 340 and the current models (XL 340*S, XL 340*M, XL 340*T and XL 340*TM) are:

- The newer models have Text-To-Speech, so they will speak street names aloud. Both devices feature spoken directions though.
- The newer models are optionally available with subscriptions to map- or traffic data updates (that's what the T and M in the model names are for). All devices come with a "30-Day Latest Map Guarantee", where you can get map updates within 30 days of registering/activating your device through TomTom HOME.

I got the older XL 340 for $99. The current XL 340*S is $139.95 with no real added functionality (except for text-to-speech, but I don't need that). The screen is big (4.3 inches), the directions it gives accurate, and the user interface easy to use. Using TomTom HOME I could update to current maps. I'd definately recommend this one.

Overall, this is a very user-friendly piece of equipment. What was a little confusing about the installation of TomTom Home was that the user manual suggested downloading the program first onto the computer without connecting the device. I did that, but when I connected the device, TomTom automatically started downloading the Home program again. Basically took up extra space on my hard drive. I would suggest just connecting the TomTom to the computer without downloading TomTom Home beforehand.

Dont waste your time or money. Its rubbish. Dont buy it or anything for that matter from Antonline. Poor packaging. Sloppy customer service combined with questionable product and lousy communication to say the least. They showed absolutely no interest in resoving my issue (the item didnt work). Kept fobbing me off to the manufacturer who couldnt help me because Antonline didnt supply any paperwork at all with their incredibly poorly packaged item. (wrapped like one of those xmas presents you get from a 3 year old). Very disappointing experience all around.

This is our first GPS and it was really easy to set up and figure out how to use. TomTom Home is a great resource for the new maps and customization of your GPS. Screen is a great size. I would recommend.
